Oh, the magical and mysterious Metolius. It wells up clear and bright from an underground spring at the base of Black Butte and provides one of the finest trout habitats around (catch-and-release fly-fishing only) before emptying into the Deschutes River.

There are varying theories about the exact origins of this headwater phenomenon, but the prevailing one seems to be that ancient earth movements blocked the original Metolius and forced it to find an alternate route. It took a while, but it eventually found an outlet at the base of Black Butte. Today, it bubbles and burbles at a rate of 50,000 gallons per minute (right before your very eyes!) to create one of the coldest and clearest rivers in Oregon.

That’s why trout like it so much. However, there was a time when salmon sought its cooling waters too. The name Metolius derives from mptolyas, a term that showed up in a 19th-century Pacific Railroad survey report. The reference is to a variety of salmon that is no longer found in the river. These days, conservation groups are working to restore native salmon (Chinook and sockeye) to the river, but it’s slow going. Anglers, on the other hand, will be in plentiful supply if you come to the Metolius at the height of the fly-fishing season.

The number of campgrounds on or near the Metolius is staggering, and they are there primarily to serve the abundance of anglers. In addition to Riverside, campers can choose from Camp Sherman, Allingham, Smiling River, Pine Rest (our next choice if Riverside is full), Gorge, Allen Springs, Pioneer Ford, and Lower Bridge, strung along the river at intervals.
